Breckenridge 1/25/10

I skied at Breck today, and for the first time I decided to hike above the Imperial chair to the tip top of the resort, listed at 12,998 feet.  I thought I was going to die on the way up….. it’s not very far, but it’s fairly steep and the air is thin.  Hard to catch your breath.  Anyway here are a few shots from up top. (I still think it’s so crazy how flat the lower part of the resort looks from up here)

Merry Christmas

Jessica had to work today, so I asked Santa to bring me lots of the fluffy white snow today.  I must have been good this year.  Although the powder wasn’t as fluffy as I would like (in fact it was quite heavy) I can’t complain!

Skied Vail for only my second time. The first was a couple years ago with Jessica.  Today I was alone, everyone missed out!

They were really busy…..  not really :)

I am cold, but the skiing is too good to go inside…

I think I rode the lift with someone else twice today.  TWICE. Out of, a lot.

When it’s -5 degrees, plus a wind chill.. the snot flow is uncontrollable. Sorry, it’s a little gross. Need to wash that mask.  And it’s a black fleece thing, not grey.  Constantly snowing today… yes!

Since I know Rogers at PPI keeps up to date on my happenings, I made it a point to go to this run and take this picture for him.  He’s such a popular guy, Vail Resort has named a run after him.  By the way, I skied left at this sign, and when I got to the next one that pointed to Rogers Run, it was a double black, not single- yowzers.

Here’s your view Rogers, from your own run.  It’s hard to get an idea from pictures on how steep it is, but for scale, use the skier in the middle of this picture as reference.  (it’s the black dot)

I turned around after the shot above and took this one too, at the top of the run.

After I went inside to warm up for a few minutes, I found out the back bowls had been opened up. For those who don’t know, this is Vail’s bread and butter terrain.  HUGE amount of steep bowls (over 6 miles across, over 2700 skiable acres).  Needless to say, I had to deal with this deep powder stuff.

I was almost afraid to take this picture… in fear of getting sucked down into the snow.  If you stop it’s hard to get going again.  My ski is under there somewhere.

Yes, it was cold.  This was when I was leaving.  But hey, it’s better than sitting at home by myself while Jessica works her buns off now isn’t it??  :)

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.  I’ll get better at updating again. My old laptop’s hard drive went out on me this quarter and I had to get a new computer. I was too lazy to figure out how to log back in (I love saving pages to my favorites, except when I need to find the link again).

Till next time!
Jake

gum print

Here’s my latest gum print.  It’s actually a reprint of a previous attempt.  Later this quarter I’ll be working on some very large gum prints in collaboration with another student… Should be interesting!

4×5 portrait

I had some 4×5 film that was about to expire, so I did a couple black & white portraits of Jessica.  I’ve been wanting to do some 4×5 film portraits for a while now, and may pursue this as a project in the near future.  Being able to use selective focus really lets the eyes tell the story.  This is Kodak T-max 100 developed in D-76 1:1 for 10.5 minutes.  I was able to use the CombiTank at school which allows the film to be processed without having to sit in complete darkness for about a half hour… I’m a fan of that now!

Jessica's new car

Jess couldn’t fight off the new car fever any longer, so we traded both of our cars and got her a new Subaru Outback Sport.   Well deserved!
